The Source Cafe [LA]

509 Pier Avenue
Hermosa Beach, CA 90254

While I was in LA, my aunt’s family and I made a necessary trip to an organic salad and juice bar in Hermosa Beach called The Source Café. Its menus are named “Edible Garden” and “Drinkable Garden,” if that gives you a sense of how healthy this place was. Additionally, the menus are marked with vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, and protein options.

We shared our food among the five of us there, so we each got to sample a number of its menu items. First, there was the Walnut Pesto Toast, which had pesto on a baguette topped with burrata (mozzarella and cream) and a drizzle of citrus honey. Sweet and delectable.

We also tried the Kale Salad, which came with kale, garbanzo bean, roasted fennel, roasted sweet onion, roasted tomato, almonds, olive oil, lemon, and sea salt. It had a slightly bitter aftertaste, but was the favorite dish among the adults present.

The Chicken Salad came with pecan pesto, celery, scallion, currant, toasted pecans, and pieces of chicken atop a bed of greens. I’m a huge pesto fan, so I loved this salad that included protein from the chicken and a crunch from the nuts.

One of the day’s specials was a roasted beets, avocado, arugula, honey, hazelnuts, and pecorino (sheep milk cheese) salad. I also thoroughly enjoyed this salad, whose beets gave it a deliciously sweet touch.

For drinks, we first tried the Green Party juice, which was kale, spinach, parsley, cucumber, celery, ginger, green apple, and lemon in a jar. To put it bluntly, the juice tasted a bit like grass, though I definitely didn’t hate it. The bitter drink had a subtle kick of parsley, and it definitely got me thinking about how often our drinks are saturated with sugar (natural or artificial).

We also got a bottle of its Mighty Mint Smoothie, which was a thick smoothie with coconut milk, tocos (a fancy word for Vitamin E), raw cacao nib, avocado, mesquite, maca (a plant), lucuma (a fruit), date, mint, and a special ingredient called BrainOn (we asked, and the waiter said it was algae). This smoothie was deliciously thick, slightly sweet, and extremely filling after just a few sips.

Ugh, come to Boston, The Source Cafe!
